Martial arts have played an enormously important role in healing for centuries. Much of Oriental medicine has an origin in martial arts. This would include acpuncture, acupressure, shiatsu, moxibustion, magnet therapy, and practically all of the wisdom of Eastern herbology.

Why the connection between martial arts and the healing arts? As one of my Kung Fu teachers put it, martial arts students kept breaking each other during their martial arts classes, whether they were pounding the mats to learn how to throw and fall through Ju-jitsu, or pounding a leather bag full of iron filings to strengthen their fists. Because martial arts training sometimes unavoidably hurts, martial arts students over the years had to look for ways to fix each other, so they could continue to train.

I'm sure there was more to it than that but the reality is that martial arts schools and temples like the Shaolin Temple had a tremendous influence on many forms of Oriental medicine.

Shihan's medicine bag offers some simple remedies,
exercises, herbology and alternative healing ideas that should be of some benefit to you on your martial arts path, as well as your lifetime journey.
